Try your hand at hand-painted rocks

Local groups have taken on the task of spreading happiness by creating hand-painted rocks that are displayed publicly.

Anyone who would like to try their hand at it can get started with a how-to session at McCall House Bed and Breakfast, 153 Oak St., Ashland, called “Snowmen Rock!” The event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12.

Rock painting groups’ mission is to make someone’s day, promote random acts of kindness or send an inspirational message. Rock painters anonymously leave their painted rocks in public places — i.e., parks, coffee shops, walkways — for someone else to find.

A taste for history

The McCall House, a beautiful Italianate bed-and-breakfast mansion on Oak Street just off Lithia Way, has published an elegant hardback book of its most popular recipes, highlighted by chef Saudia Sharkey’s yummy Shakshuka, an Israeli poached egg dish on sourdough baguette with garlic and diced tomatoes.

The 136-year old home, built by Civil War hero Capt. John McCall and his wife, Mary, serves thousands of guests a year, including many locals who come for a “stay-cation,” and to enjoy the delicious meals, says innkeeper Amanda Butler.

Ashland’s McCall House B&B Lives With Its Original Treasured Purpose

I experienced an incredibly delicious breakfast at McCall House B & B yesterday morning. It was delightful to sit in the ambiance of the history that remains enlivened with great care and meticulous details of what was once the hub of the young, bustling Ashland community. The Victorian Italianate house was built in 1883 for the founder, John McCall, of the Ashland Woolen Mill, Ashland Library, and Bank of Ashland.

Gerry Frank's picks: Bed and breakfasts cater to your individual needs

Another historic home transformed into a B&B is The McCall House. It's an especially great place to stay if you're visiting for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, located just a block away. Grand Victorian accommodations such as king beds, claw foot tubs and fireplaces separate the McCall House from other B&B's. Other amenities include Wi-Fi, spa towels, private bathrooms, quality linens, robes and general conveniences like a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemakers and more. A selection of wine, champagne and complimentary sherry is offered in the lounge and library. At the McCall House, it's especially important for the hosts to provide the best experience based on your individual needs and desires whether that means sharing their local expertise on the happenings around town, arranging transportation, in-room accommodations unique to your preferences or making arrangements for your pet at a local kennel during your stay – they are happy to do it. Looking for something more private? They also feature five cottages!

3 Reasons to Drive 7 Hours to Ashland, Oregon

by Harriet Heydemann

(#2) We stayed in a refurbished Italianate Victorian mansion built in 1883, located just a short walk to the theater. The McCall House spoiled us with gourmet breakfasts and yummy gluten-free (thank you) treats. The innkeeper was a fount of knowledge for all things Ashland and beyond. The inn and the town, with its boutiques, bookstores, galleries, and wine tasting rooms, took us to another time and place, or maybe we just stopped time long enough to appreciate the lush Rogue Valley.
